About the Standard

Introduction to
Vegan Certification.

Originating in the food industry, veganism eschews the consumption or use of animal products, aligning with the ethos of minimising animal exploitation and cruelty. A vegan-certified product prohibits any animal-derived substances, signalling your company's dedication to animal welfare.

ICB UK's certification adheres to The Vegan Society's standards, providing globally recognised assurance that your products and processes are genuinely vegan. Our process includes ingredient verification and a thorough review of your manufacturing process.

Companies must also demonstrate adequate measures for thorough cleaning and sanitisation of equipment used between vegan and non-vegan production cycles to minimise cross-contamination.

Vegan Certification Criteria.

To attain Vegan Certification, a product must satisfy all four of the following criteria:

01

No Animal Ingredients

Products must not contain meat, fish, fowl, animal by-products, eggs or egg products, milk or milk derivatives, honey or honey bee products, or insect-derived items such as silk or dyes.

02

No Animal-Derived Sweeteners

Sweeteners must not undergo filtration or processing with bone char. Liquids like beer, wine, maple syrup, and fruit juices may not be filtered, defoamed, or clarified with animal products.

03

No Animal Testing

Products must not undergo animal testing of ingredients or final products by any party — whether supplier, producer, manufacturer, or independent — for any form of research and must not be subject to future testing.

04

No Animal-Derived GMOs

Products may not contain any animal-derived GMOs or genes utilised in manufacturing ingredients or final products. Prebiotics and probiotics must be cultured on media devoid of animal products.

Cosmetics & Beauty

Vegan Certification
for Cosmetics.

Vegan certification underscores your cosmetic brand's commitment to animal welfare, enabling you to convey broader ethical and value-based messages to consumers. Given the prevalence of animal-based ingredients in cosmetics globally, this certification holds significant importance for cosmetics brands.

Note: The European Cosmetics Regulation EC No 1223/2009 prohibited animal testing on cosmetics in 2004 and on ingredients in 2009 and 2013. Claims such as "cruelty-free" are restricted in the EU — however, the claim "vegan" remains viable as it encompasses broader requirements.

Examples of animal-derived ingredients in everyday cosmetics:
Lanolin (from sheep's wool)
Collagen (from animal tissue)
Keratin (from hair/hooves)
Carmine (from cochineal insects)
Beeswax and honey derivatives
Squalene (from shark liver)
